VOIP and SIP

Over next few years more and more of the phone calls we all make will go over the internet using VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). (SIP is the technical name for the protocol used.)

This technology offers a number of advantages to all sizes of business:

  • Call charges are lower using VOIP.
  • A number of phone calls can use the same phone line at the same time reducing the number of lines you need to rent. The actual number of calls depends on your distance from the exchange.
  • Expanding businesses, especially in rural areas, are running out of phone lines and face the high cost of adding new lines. Using VOIP can cut the number of lines needed.
  • Because calls go over the internet you can make and receive calls using your office number anywhere (in the world) as long as you are connected to the internet, for the same cost as if you were in the office. The person on the other end has no idea where you are!
  • Hosted VOIP gives SMEs access to many of the services previously only available to larger companies such as
    • Individual DDI (Direct Dial In) numbers.
    • Group pickup.
    • Conference calls.
    • Call transfer.
    • Inteliigent voicemail.
  • All these features (and more) are available to users no matter where they are located - great for people working from home.
